The Arising of Indonesia Cruise Industry

Since the end of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2022, the cruise industry in Indonesia has shown extraordinary development and revival. With a total of 119 cruise calls starting from September 2022 to April 2023, it shows that attractiveness of Indonesia could still attract tourists to visit both domestic and foreign tourists.

Reopening in September 2022, 3 cruise visits immediately occurred. This number continued to increase until in February there were 39 cruise visits. As of April 2023, the average cruise ship visit has reached 15 visits per month. The visiting cruise ships also varied in size, of the 119 ships that visited, 61 ships had an LOA of more than 200m, while 58 ships had an LOA of less than 200m. The total number of tourists visiting from September 2022 to April 2023 was 77,674 tourists, with an average of 9,702 per month.

All of this could happen not only because of Indonesia's extraordinary attractiveness in the eyes of the world but also the important role of the readiness of ports and related agencies that could make the development and revival of the cruise ship industry in Indonesia possible.
